Heatwave arriving in Southeast Michigan: Tips to stay safe in hot, humid conditions

Extreme Heat Watch issued for Tuesday through Thursday

Extreme Heat Watch issued for Tuesday through Thursday across Southeast Michigan (WDIV)

Hot and humid conditions arrive this week across Southeast Michigan. This could become one of the hottest stretches of the season.

A 4Warn Weather Alert will be in effect Tuesday through Friday as dangerous heat settles over the region.

An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for Tuesday through Thursday, when afternoon high temperatures are forecast to soar close to 100 degrees. Combined with oppressive humidity, heat index values will exceed 105 degrees each afternoon, creating potentially dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Adding to the concern, there will be very little overnight relief. Low temperatures will only fall into the mid-70s, making it difficult for homes without air conditioning to cool down and increasing the cumulative impacts of the prolonged heat.

Record heat

The last time Metro Detroit officially reached 100°F or higher was during the July 2012 heat wave. Here are the most recent 100-degree days at DTW:

  • July 17, 2012: 102°F (most recent 100°+ day)
  • July 7, 2012: 100°F
  • July 4, 2012: 102°F

Heat safety

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and check on elderly neighbors, young children, and pets. Never leave children or animals unattended inside a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
