DEARBORN, Mich. – A man linked to a 2021 shooting at a Westland bowling alley has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison.
Federal agents raided Gregory Augusta Powell’s Dearborn home in 2025, leading to his arrest on a federal charge of unlawful possession of ammunition.
He would later plead guilty to the charge in March 2026.
According to authorities, Powell was arrested and convicted of attempted murder in 2006. He was sentenced to 12-20 years and was released at some point before April 2021.
As a convicted felon, he is ineligible to possess firearms or ammunition.
On Tuesday, July 14, Powell was sentenced to 18 months in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, followed by three years of supervised release.
2021 Westland bowling shooting
On April 24, 2021, a shooting took place just after midnight at the Vision Lanes Bowling alley in Westland. One of the victims told first responders he got into an altercation with an unknown man, who pulled out a gun and fired.
Further investigation revealed Powell as the suspected gunman. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Powell entering the bowling alley, the altercation, the shooting and Powell leaving with the gun in hand.
Powell allegedly left his ID at the bowling alley, too.
He was arrested later that day. Authorities said Powell told them he was at the bowling alley and there was an altercation and when one man approached him, Powell grabbed a handgun he had stashed in his girlfriend’s purse before shooting at the man.
He reportedly admitted to police he had bought the gun off the street in Lansing a few months prior to the shooting and acknowledged he is ineligible to have a gun as a convicted felon.
After Powell was released on parole in February 2025, bullet casings from the scene were analyzed. Federal authorities concluded on Nov. 13, 2025, that the ammunition was manufactured outside Michigan.
