Person of interest in custody after hit-and-run critically injures child in Oakland County
A person of interest is in custody after a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a juvenile pedestrian in Oakland County.
The crash occurred on Sunday (July 19) at about 11:17 p.m. on westbound 8 Mile Road, east of Wyoming Avenue in Royal Oak Township. Police said the child was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene while continuing west on 8 Mile Road.
Michigan State Police announced on July 20, 2026, that investigators have since taken a person of interest into custody at the Metro North Post.
Pilot project to remove algae ‘muck’ from Lake St. Clair set to begin this fall
Macomb County officials are launching a new pilot project this fall to remove problematic “muck” from Lake St. Clair and explore how to better manage the issue in the future.
Approximately $800,000 in state funding has been earmarked for the three-year project, which will include the removal of M. wollei from three Lake St. Clair shorelines: Veterans Memorial Park in St. Clair Shores, Campau Bay (on South River Road near the mouth of the Clinton River) in Harrison Township, and Hidden Cove Condominiums marina, south of the Clinton River Spillway in Harrison Township.
Macomb County inmate charged with first-degree murder after deadly cellmate attack
A 50-year-old inmate has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 73-year-old cellmate at the Macomb County Correctional Facility.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said Aaron Samir Akel was arraigned in 42-2 District Court Monday (July 20) on charges stemming from the April 22 killing of Daniel Hosmer inside the jail in New Haven. Prosecutors allege Akel strangled Hosmer during the early morning hours before stabbing him in the eye and impaling him through the other eye with the broken handle of a broomstick.
