DETROIT – The Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened to traffic on Monday.
The bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor officially opened to traffic on July 27.
Gordie Howe’s family was among the first to cross the bridge over the Detroit River.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also drove across the Gordie Howe Bridge in a Ford Mustang to celebrate its opening.

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield released a statement following the bridge’s opening:
“Today marks a historic moment for Detroit, for Windsor, and for the lasting friendship between the United States and Canada.
This new connection between Detroit and Windsor will strengthen our economy, support jobs, and bring lasting benefits to communities on both sides of the river. I’m grateful to the thousands of skilled workers who built it, and to the many partners whose years of effort made it possible.
