Driver shot by police during alleged car break-in arrests in Wayne County

DETROIT – A person was shot by police while officers were trying to make an arrest Wednesday morning after multiple cars were broken into in Metro Detroit.

Dearborn police said officers were trying to arrest multiple people around 5:45 a.m. on Aug. 5 near Southfield Road and Jefferson Avenue in Ecorse for their alleged involvement in breaking into several dozen cars across Metro Detroit.

During the arrest attempts, the driver allegedly drove away, hitting an officer. Another officer then shot the driver.

The driver left the scene but was later taken into custody after a police chase. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The injured officer was also taken to a local hospital.

The investigation was turned over to Michigan State Police.
