HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Hamtramck City Councilman Mohammed Hassan was sentenced to one year of probation after being convicted of making a false statement on an application for an absentee ballot, according to court records and prosecutors.
Hassan was found guilty of the misdemeanor charge following allegations that he submitted an absentee ballot application using the name of Zerin Sultana.
Prosecutors said Sultana testified that she did not request an absentee ballot, did not sign the application, and does not vote.
A jury acquitted Hassan of two additional, more serious charges related to the case.
As part of his sentence, Hassan must serve one year of probation and complete 80 hours of community service.
The case was the subject of a Local 4 investigation into allegations of election fraud.
The misdemeanor conviction stems from an absentee ballot application that prosecutors said was submitted under Sultana’s name.
Hassan faced additional charges, but jurors found him not guilty of those offenses.
Hassan remains a member of the Hamtramck City Council.
