DETROIT – A 13-year-old boy accused of shooting his father in Detroit and fleeing in his father’s SUV may face additional charges in Ohio, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said during his annual Walk-A-Mile Wednesday.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday (Aug. 11) around 5 p.m. on Bretton on Detroit’s west side.
Police said the boy was being disciplined by his father when he grabbed a gun and shot him in the back.
The boy then took the family dog and fled in his father’s SUV.
He was arrested about five hours later in Ohio.
Bettison said police are working with Ohio officials to determine how the case will proceed and whether the boy will face charges there before being returned to Michigan.
“It’s a process where he committed some crimes in Ohio, so we’re working on getting him back here to Michigan,” Bettison said. “But the conversation that we’re having with Ohio because they may want to process him on some of those charges as well.”
Bettison said the boy’s father remains hospitalized.
Police described his injuries as non-life-threatening.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and the boy’s flight into Ohio.
Additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
