DETROIT – Sixty-seven Detroit residents will go to bed Friday as homeowners after completing the Detroit Land Bank Authority’s Buy Back program, which helps people living in land-bank-owned homes purchase those properties.
The program is not a free pass to homeownership.
Participants must first become current on their property taxes, complete financial literacy counseling, and attend homeownership workshops.
On Friday (Sept. 25), 67 residents who completed those requirements were celebrated as they received their deeds.
“The work is theirs,” said Tammy Daniels, CEO of the Detroit Land Bank Authority. “We can’t take responsibility. They do the hard work. They save the money. They go to the classes. They invest in their property and help communicate with us to make sure everything is on track. Really, it’s their efforts that are being celebrated today.”
The Buy Back program was created to help residents take ownership of the homes they have been living in while giving them the tools and resources needed to maintain that ownership.
Since the program launched, the Detroit Land Bank Authority has returned deeds to more than 1,400 Detroit residents.
