Driver dies when SUV hits embankment on I-94 in Detroit

Police say victim wasn't wearing seatbelt

DETROIT – A driver was thrown and killed from his SUV early Thursday morning when hit an embankment on I-94 in Detroit.

Michigan State Police said the driver appeared to be speeding in the westbound lanes near Cadieux just before 3 a.m. when his SUV went up an embankment, hit a tree and smashed into a light pole.

Police said the victim, 29-year-old Rafael Ross from Detroit, wasn't wearing his seat belt. No one else was in the SUV.

The interstate was shut down until just after 6 a.m. for the crash clean up.
