Ellis allegedly told police he shot niece because he was 'stressed out'

DETROIT – A 57-year-old man was charged Wednesday in connection with the fatal shooting of his niece after he called Detroit police telling authorities he killed her because he was “stressed out.”

The shooting happened Friday at about 10:30 a.m.  in the 15800 block of Winthrop Street.

Ira C. Ellis, of Detroit, is charged with first-degree murder and felony firearms violations.

The victim was identified as 42-year-old Katherine Grimes, also of Detroit. Sources said police found Ellis , his mother, and the victim in the living room waiting for police Grimes was a caretaker for the suspected shooter's mother who has dementia.

"That was her heart. She'd come every morning to take care of this woman," Grimes' mother, Ora, said.

Authorities said Grimes was shot multiple times with a handgun. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Grimes was engaged to be married in October. She was a mother of two children.
