MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man died early Saturday after being hit by a car in a Monroe Township parking lot.
Authorities said a 24-year-old man was backing his car out of a space in a private parking lot in the 5000 block of Northfield Drive at about 1:40 a.m. when he struck a 50-year-old man who was standing next to the car.

John R. Hernandez, of Monroe, was knocked to the ground by the 2002 BMW and suffered critical injuries. He was transported to Promedica Toledo Hospital in Toledo, where he later died.
Authorities said the driver didn't know Hernandez was next to the car. The driver and his passenger were not injured, and speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
