BELMONT, Mich. – Western Michigan police say an 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after being run over by his mother’s car as she dropped him off at school.

Kent County sheriff’s Sgt. Joel Roon says the boy had just left his mother’s car Tuesday morning and was holding onto the front passenger door when the car began pulling away.

Roon says the boy’s feet left the ground before he fell and was run over by a back wheel of the car in the parking lot of Chandler Woods Charter Academy in Belmont.

MLive.com reports that the boy was taken by ambulance to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Roon says investigators are trying to determine what happened and why the boy was holding the door handle.
