Pregnant woman, man fatally shot at home in Southwest Detroit

Pregnant mother of 2 killed in shooting

DETROIT – Several shots were fired Tuesday into a home in Southwest Detroit, killing a 29-year-old pregnant mother of two and a man.

Police have not identified who they think is the killer, but two people have been taken into custody.

Neither of the two people in custody are believed to be involved in the shooting. One person had illegal weapons on him, and the other got belligerent with police as they were questioning him.

Police said the killer had a long gun and fired at the house, killing Sophia Wilson and the man.

Detroit police arrived at the home on Deacon Street to find two people shot and killed. They said the shots were fired from outside.

"Everybody loved her," said Monica Wilson, Sophia Wilson's mother. "She was such a free spirit."

Sophia Wilson had two children and was four months pregnant with her third child.

"She was a wonderful mother," Monica Wilson said. "I just saw her this morning when I took my grandbabies to school and then we went shopping for the last time."

Sophia Wilson's boyfriend was one of the two people taken into custody, but he wasn't home when the shooting happened. Her parents had been trying to get her away from the neighborhood to come back home.

"She was such a loving and caring person," her mother said.

Police are working on a few theories about the motive. They'll only say the house was definitely targeted, but maybe not the victims.

"I go to these every day, and it doesn't sit well," Detroit police Capt. Darin Szilagy said. "All my years out here, I have not seen anyone die for anything that was worthy."

"You hear it every day," Monica Wilson said. "I watch you all every day. I never thought it would be our child."

Sophia Wilson was just one week away from her 30th birthday. She was about to find out if she was having a boy or a girl. Her parents said they will now be caring for her 9-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son.
