Survivors of Vista Maria gather in Allen Park for support, call for changes to sexual assault laws

Organizers emphasized the importance of community and shared experiences in healing

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Former residents of Vista Maria gathered in Allen Park for support and an update on a lawsuit involving allegations of abuse at the residential youth facility.

The survivors say they experienced mental, physical, and sexual abuse while at Vista Maria.

Investigators have previously reported extensively on those allegations.

Tuesday (Aug. 18) night’s event brought survivors together with speakers who specialize in youth trauma and mental health.

Organizers emphasized the importance of community and shared experiences in healing.

Clinical psychologist Robert Foltz said connecting with others who have experienced similar trauma can help survivors begin to feel less isolated.

“To realize that other people have experienced the same pain and distress and trauma they have experienced, even though it could be individually different, those same events, there’s a certain feeling that it becomes a shared sense of distress, fear and a lack of safety,” Foltz said.

He said recognizing that others have been able to move forward can give survivors hope.

“But then realizing that you’re not alone is a really valuable experience, and it starts as that first building block of, well, it seems like they’re doing OK, maybe I can get better too,” Foltz said.

The gathering also focused on the legal fight involving former Vista Maria residents.

Survivors are calling on lawmakers in Lansing to change Michigan’s statute of limitations for sexual assault cases, saying changes could give more people who experienced abuse as children an opportunity to pursue justice.

For many of those who attended Tuesday’s event, the gathering was about more than the lawsuit.

It was an opportunity to connect with others who understand the lasting effects of childhood trauma and to remind survivors that they do not have to face those experiences alone.
