Dozens killed, multiple injured after shooter opens fire at Texas church

Gunman identified as Devin Patrick Kelley

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas – At least 26 people were killed and multiple people were injured in a mass shooting Sunday at a Sutherland Springs, Texas church, local news station KSAT 12 reports.

According to KSAT, the shooting is the deadliest mass shooting in modern Texas history.

According to KSAT, a witness reported seeing a man walk into First Baptist Church and begin shooting around 11:30 a.m. The shooter, identified to NBC by law enforcement, was Devin Patrick Kelley of New Braunfels, Texas.

Kelley, 26, is now dead.

Officials don't have the exact number of people who were killed or injured, though some people were able to escape the church.

Wilson County commissioner Albert Gamez Jr. told a CNN reporter that the gunman fled in a vehicle after the shooting and is now dead after a brief pursuit. A community member confronted the gunman, officials said.

The man who confronted Kelley fired shots with his own rifle, causing Kelley to drop his weapon, officials said.

According to officials, Kelley was wearing a ballistic vest and had a Ruger AR Rifle.

A cashier at a gas station across the street from the church told CNN that she heard about 20 shots being fired in quick succession during a service. Kelley shot outside the church before entering the building, officials said.

Some victims were taken by medical helicopter to the Brooke Army Medical Center, KSAT reported.

NBC News reports that the church pastor's wife said that their 14-year-old daughter was among the victims killed. The victims range from 5-72 years old, officials said.

While the gunman's motives are unknown, NBC reports that there appears to be no obvious signs of a terrorism connection.

KSAT did a live report from the scene. Watch it below.
