Red Cross mobilizes disaster team as floodwaters rise in Northern Michigan

22 disaster workers support relief, emergency shelter open in Cheboygan

The American Red Cross has deployed 22 trained disaster workers to Northern Michigan amid rising floodwaters.

The organization opened an emergency shelter at the Knights of Columbus, located at 9840 N. Straits Highway in Cheboygan. Forty-three people stayed there overnight after being evacuated due to flooding.

Anyone affected by the flooding can stop by the shelter for a hot meal, a place to sleep, or simply to charge a phone.

All Red Cross disaster assistance is free.

The Red Cross said it is working closely with emergency management agencies and community partners who are keeping a close watch on the Cheboygan Dam and Lock Complex, and other dams and rivers across Northern Michigan.

Those waterways are at varying flood stages and concern levels, according to the organization.

Residents who need help or have been impacted by the flooding can call 1-800-RED CROSS.

Flood safety tips

Here’s a list of flood safety tips that the Red Cross shared:

  • Never walk, swim or drive through floodwater.
  • Just 6 inches of fast-moving floodwater can knock you over and 12 inches can carry your vehicle away.
  • Avoid fallen power lines, poles and wire. They can electrocute you.
  • Watch out for falling trees and other debris.
  • Flooding can contaminate drinking water. Check with your local public health department.
  • Stay away from floodwaters. They can contain sewage, sharp items, chemicals that can make you ill.
