Renderings of a skyscraper planned for the old Hudson's department store site in Detroit.

DETROIT – Dan Gilbert's Bedrock real estate company broke ground Thursday morning on the site of the former Hudson's Department store in Downtown Detroit.

Bedrock plans to construct a 58-story residential tower and a 12-story building on the site. The tower will be the tallest skyscraper in Detroit upon its completion. It will have a top-floor, multi-level public observation deck that will be 800 feet above the city.

New York-based SHoP Architects and Detroit-based Hamilton Anderson are behind the design and architecture. A timetable for completion has not been offered.

We asked Nextdoor users in Detroit how they felt about Bedrock's plans for the site. Forty-seven people voted in the non-scientific poll with 47 percent saying they think it's a "Great Project." Another 32 percent answered "We'll see," and 11 percent said it was an "Eyesore" or "Bring back the Hudson Building."
