The dream to attend a university is one that many have, but several factors can weigh into the decision. The biggest consideration a prospective college student must undertake is cost.

The new Titan Edge program at University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) provides free tuition to first-year students who meet certain eligibility requirements.

During the 2024-25 academic year, the university will offer free tuition to first-year freshmen who meet the eligibility requirements (listed at end of page). Students who continue to meet these requirements may renew for up to four years.

Titan Edge combines state and federal scholarships, along with grants and UDM financial aid, to cover the costs and fees. However, the program does not cover summer semesters, nor does it cover expenses related to housing, food, books, additional fees like enrollment deposit and orientation fees, or any other educational costs.

Additionally, it does not apply to the School of Dentistry or the School of Law.

In 2024, The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse ranked UDM No. 52 in the nation. It is also the second-highest ranked university in Michigan, fourth among Catholic institutions nationally and third-highest ranked Jesuit university.

Fall 2023 saw the largest first-year McNichols campus incoming class in 14 years. University representatives say now is the best time for students to apply.

Of the 552 new students who arrived on campus in the fall, 264 will be the first in their family to earn a bachelor’s degree and 196 will be the first in their family to attend college.

Students interested in the Titan Edge will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be eligible for the maximum Federal Pell Grant.
  • Be eligible for the full Michigan Achievement Scholarship.
  • Be eligible for the full Michigan Tuition Grant.
  • Be enrolled full time (12-18 credit hours) in an undergraduate program.
  • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before May 1 and list University of Detroit Mercy (school code: 002323).

UDM leaders said to be considered, it’s simple: apply for admission and complete the FAFSA, listing UDM. The university will handle the rest.
