DETROIT – All students, faculty and staff at the University of Detroit Mercy must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before the beginning of the fall 2021 semester, officials announced Thursday. A campus-wide survey of students and employees indicated a large majority are already fully vaccinated or plan to be by the fall semester, Garibaldi said. Masks will not be required outdoors at University of Detroit Mercy except in large groups where physical distancing is not possible, Garibaldi said. Larger schools in the state like Oakland University and the University of Michigan have announced vaccine requirements for students living on campus or in university housing but have stopped short of requiring all students, faculty and staff to be vaccinated. Albion College is requiring students, faculty and staff to be fully vaccinated and present proof of vaccination by Aug. 1.

DETROIT – A $10.4 million project expected to bring “new vitality and much-needed housing” to a critical Detroit neighborhood has won state and local financial incentives of more than $2.6 million. Planned for 7303 W. McNichols Road, the project will begin with the demolition of three vacant buildings between Prairie and Monica streets. “As with many projects in Detroit, our project would not be possible without the support of our state, local and philanthropic partners, like MEDC,” said George N’Namdi, a partner with 7303 West McNichols LLC, which is behind the project. MSF also approved $228,537 in state tax capture for the reimbursement of brownfield clean-up costs. “Our interest is to bring affordable housing and innovative design which has all the attributes of market-rate offerings,” N’Namdi said.

DETROIT – The University of Detroit Mercy has pulled the plug on the rest of the women’s basketball season amid complaints that the coach is abusing her players. The university announced Thursday night that the women’s basketball season is over, after some serious claims against the program. “Emotional abuse, physical abuse in terms of going way over the allotted hours the NCAA provides. The allegations were made by parents of the 14 players on the team, saying the problem is with first-year coach Ann Marie Gilbert. University of Detroit Mercy Officials Broke Ground on Expansion Project Monday
(CBS Detroit) – Improvements are underway on McNichols and Livernois, an expansion project launching at the University of Detroit Mercy. The renovation project is expected to draw more economic opportunities to Detroit’s University District. Phase one includes the renovation and expansion of the Student Union, while phase two tackles the Fisher Administration Center and Reno Hall demolition. DETROIT – Terry Duerod, a college basketball standout who played for Dick Vitale at the University of Detroit Mercy in the 1970s before winning an NBA title with the Boston Celtics, has died. The school announced Duerod's death Friday and said he'd been fighting Leukemia. Vitale said in that news release that he'd found out from Duerod's wife about his death. In 1977 — Vitale's last year coaching at the school — the Titans won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time. He played two more at Detroit after that, averaging 23.3 points a game as a senior and helping the team to another NCAA Tournament appearance.
Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena to host regional round of 2024 NCAA Tournament
DETROIT – Detroit will be one of four regional hosts for the 2024 NCAA men’s basketball tournament. It will be the third time Little Caesars Arena has hosted NCAA Tournament action. The arena hosted first- and second-round games in 2018 and will do the same for the 2021 tournament. University of Detroit Mercy expanding with new Novi campus
NOVI, MI — The University of Detroit Mercy is opening a Novi campus that will allow it to expand graduate and health education programs, as well as new offerings in health care and related fields. The new campus is an example of the institution’s bright future as the state and country continue to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic, Detroit Mercy President Antoine Garibaldi said. The university expects to offer professional development programs, including dental education, at the new campus, officials said. The expansion comes less than a year after Detroit Mercy completed the largest fundraising campaign in the university’s history, exceeding its $100-million goal by $15 million. The university announced a multi-year, multi-million-dollar renovation project of the McNichols campus that will begin in mid-November, the release states.

DETROIT – The basketball world is in mourning after former University of Detroit Mercy basketball coach Smokey Gaines lost his battle with cancer. Gaines joined Vitale’s staff as an assistant and when Vitale went to the Pistons, Smokey became the University of Detroit’s first Black head coach. He also get the team to the NCAA tournament and, two years later, Gaines left to become the head coach at San Diego State University. Gaines had a long career in basketball, but he never forgot where he came from and always stayed close to the Detroit Mercy Titans program. Smokey Gaines smoked the nets and opened doors for others.
5 students test positive for COVID-19 at University of Detroit Mercys School of Dentistry
DETROIT With 700 students seeing patients and members of the public at two facilities, five students at University of Detroit Mercys School of Dentistry have tested positive for COVID-19. The fact that five students tested positive wasnt the essence of the story, dean Aksu said. The other two students who tested positive are believed to have picked up the virus off campus through community exposure. University Of Detroit-Mercy And Wayne State Receive Over $19 Million For Research Program
University of Detroit Mercy (Detroit Mercy) and Wayne State Universitys (WSU) ReBUILDetroit program recently received a renewal grant of more than $19 million over five years from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The ReBUILDetroit program works to encourage undergraduate students from underrepresented or economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in biomedical research. ReBUILDetroit is a partnership between University of Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University, supported by an initial $21.2 million grant awarded in 2014. During her Detroit Mercy career, she conducted public health research from her first year until she graduated. My passion for public health started when I took a class on health disparities.
