DETROIT – The Detroit Pistons have signed head coach J.B. Bickerstaff to a contract extension, president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon announced Monday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, in keeping with team policy, but following a tough series with the Orlando Magic, in which Detroit won Game 7 116-94 inside Little Caesars Arena, Bickerstaff was rewarded ahead of their second-round matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Bickerstaff has gone 104-60 in two seasons with Detroit, guiding the Pistons to back-to-back playoff appearances.

He owns a 359-350 career record over 10 seasons as an NBA head coach, with five playoff appearances.

Bickerstaff was selected as the 2026 recipient of the Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year Award.

He led the Pistons to a historic regular season with a 60-22 record and the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Detroit secured its first Central Division title in 18 years with a season-ending win over the Indiana Pacers, reaching the 60-win mark for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

The Pistons finished with their best record in two decades under Bickerstaff, a testament to the franchise’s past success.

Detroit’s 60-win season marks its strongest showing since the “Goin’ to Work” era team that reached the Eastern Conference finals in 2006.

It also joins the franchise’s elite seasons, including the 1988-89 “Bad Boys” team that went on to win an NBA title.

The award is presented annually to an NBA head coach who demonstrates excellence on the court and dedication to the community.

Named in honor of longtime NBCA executive director Michael H. Goldberg, the honor is voted on by the league’s 30 head coaches.

Bickerstaff, in his second season with Detroit, also posted 32 home victories and a franchise-record 28 road wins.

He became the first coach in NBA history to lead a team from 60 losses to 60 wins within a two-season span.

Bickerstaff also reached 100 wins with the franchise in 159 games, the third-fastest mark in team history.

Seven coaches received votes for the award. Along with Bickerstaff, those recognized were Mark Daigneault of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Mitch Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs, Charles Lee of the Charlotte Hornets, Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics, Quin Snyder of the Atlanta Hawks, and Tiago Splitter of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Under Bickerstaff, the Pistons emerged as one of the league’s most physical teams, leading the NBA in points in the paint (57.9) and blocks per game (6.4).

Detroit also ranked first in steals (10.4) and offensive points in the paint, while finishing second in defensive rating (108.9) and net rating (8.4).

Bickerstaff earned Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honors for October and November and served as head coach for the Eastern Conference team at the 2026 NBA All-Star Game, leading the squad to a victory.

The Michael H. Goldberg award, established by the NBCA, honors the legacy of its first executive director, who helped shape the organization after its founding in 1976.

Recent winners include Kenny Atkinson (2025), Mark Daigneault (2024), Mike Brown (2023), and Monty Williams (2022, 2021).

The NBA’s official Coach of the Year award will be announced later during the 2026 playoffs.
