65-year Lions season ticket holder prepares for opener

George Sharpe first bought season tickets in 1952

DETROIT – George Sharpe, 92, might have to be reminded of something now and then, but put an old Barry Sanders video in front of him and he can break down the play.

"That was a great run," Sharpe said.

Sharpe is a Lions legend, just one who never suited up in the Honolulu Blue and Silver. The man first purchased his season tickets back in 1952 and hasn’t missed a year since.

"I've supported them all my life," Sharpe said.

Sharpe's son, Mike, jokes that his dad has probably seen half of the Detroit players who are in the Football Hall of Fame play.

Sharpe started in Tiger Stadium, followed the Lions to Pontiac and now to Ford Field.

Sharpe did get to see the one playoff win in person, but there hasn’t been all that much to cheer for in six decades, so why does he still go?

He said the money has been well worth it.

"Yes, every bit, every dime," he said. "Because I've enjoyed it."

It's more about family than wins and losses to Sharpe and you never know, maybe this current squad could win it for George?

"Go Lions!" Sharpe said.

Sharpe will be in attendance Sunday when the Lions host the Cardinals to open up the regular season. They'll sit in their regular seats in section 126.
