Ann Arbor's Maize and Blue Deli is ready for Michigan championship

Maize and Blue Deli is ready for Michigan basketball National Championship with 'The Championship Celebration' sandwich

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No place has more maize and blue spirit than the Maize and Blue Deli with a wall just for Michigan all-stars.

It's the place where Michael Phelps consumed many of his 5,000 daily calories while training for the Olympics. The deli has a sandwich for every occasion, including Monday night's NCAA basketball championship against Louisville.

"We got the Foul Shot, so we know U of M is going to make at least one today," said Ken Silverman, a Michigan fan and deli customer.

If the Wolverines pull off the national championship win, they're going to need a sandwich for that. What should go on a championship sandwich?

"I'm always a big fan of roast beef, corned beef, pastrami, or you could put it all on there," said Joe Thomas, a Michigan fan and deli customer.

The consensus is that this is a no-frills team. Lost of meat will be needed.

"Maybe take off some of the fill stuff like lettuce and tomato and just put cheese and a lot of different kinds of meat," said customer and fan Frank Marcinkiewicz.

Of course, as it turns out, the Maize and Blue Deli already has a sandwich ready for Tuesday: No. 28 -- The Championship Celebration with smoked turkey, cheese and a fried egg on top.

Why those ingredients?

"You put an egg on there, you fry it. We got to fry the opponents. Smoke turkey to smoke them out, and it's just a great combination. There's nothing better," said Eric Sukkar, of the Maize and Blue Deli.

And no one around the famous Ann Arbor deli doubts Michigan will beat Louisville.

"No. 28 tomorrow. The Championship Celebration. Absolutely. Go Blue,"
