Great Lakes Regional champs

Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores got a chance to represent Michigan in the Great Lakes regional, but it's been a while since the state took home a regional title.

The tournament got off to a rough start for Michigan, as it lost its first game to Ohio, 10-2. The loss dropped Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores immediately into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament, leaving a steep uphill battle for the boys from Wayne County.

The journey almost ended the following day, as Michigan squeaked by Indiana, 4-3, to keep its season alive.

After that close call, Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores never looked back. The offense jumped all over Kentucky on Aug. 10, winning 10-0 to advance to the regional semifinals and setting up a rematch with Ohio.

This time it was all Michigan, which jumped on Ohio's pitching early and cruised to an 11-3 win. The last team standing between Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores and Williamsport was an undefeated Illinois squad.

The team from Hinsdale, Illinois, jumped out to a 2-1 lead through three innings, and Michigan's offense couldn't get anything going. But it exploded in the fifth inning, picking up five runs and carrying Michigan to a 6-3 win.
