The former Michigan State star played an NBA playoff game on Monday night, hours after learning that Adreian Payne was killed in a shooting in Florida. “I call on my Spartan family, coach Izzo, Magic, Jaren Jackson, Miles Bridges, Mat Ishbia, all of my Spartan family to come in and let’s do something in honor of Adreian,” Green said. Both went on to the NBA, and Green for 10 seasons and counting with the Warriors and Payne for four seasons with the Timberwolves, Hawks and Magic before playing overseas.

One person in the crash also needed to be freed from a car. Police responded to a 4:52 p.m. report of a two-vehicle crash near M-66 and Swift Road in Pennfield Township. Through an investigation, police determined a SUV was traveling southbound and crossed over the center line, colliding with a four-door passenger vehicle traveling northbound. Police said the driver of the SUV, a 26-year-old man, suffered injuries to his lower body. The driver of the other involved vehicle, a 20-year-old man, was trapped inside the vehicle and needed to be freed by Pennfield Township Fire personnel.

Payne spent four years at Michigan State, where he won All-Big Ten honors as a junior and a senior.

Payne, 31, was known for the bond he formed with a young girl who had become ill with cancer. A 29-year-old man has been charged with murder in the Orlando shooting and is in custody.

Former Michigan State forward Adreian Payne has died in a Monday morning shooting in Florida, police confirmed. Payne was shot at 1:37 a.m. on Monday in Orlando and died at a local hospital. Payne played for Michigan State from 2010-14, his last three years as a starter. A first-round NBA Draft pick in 2015, Payne played in the NBA for parts of four seasons with the Hawks, Timberwolves and Magic. He was released by the Magic in 2018 after it was reported that he was investigated for sexual assault during his time at Michigan State.

MSU basketball star Adreian Payne met Lacey during a hospital visit. They became close friends and the little girl who came to be known as Princess Lacey shared many special moments with Payne and the MSU team. More than 2,500 people filled the Breslin Center Thursday for a special memorial ceremony, which was highlighted by a video showing many of Lacey's special moments shared with the team. Payne spoke in a recorded tribute, as did Lacey's mother, Heather Holsworth. Those who knew her spoke of Lacey's love of dancing, her winning smile, and her lack of fear.
