Apple debuts discount watch, but no new iPhones ... yet
In this still image provided by Apple from the keynote video of a special event at Apple Park in Cupertino, Calif., Apple's Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams unveils Apple Watch Series 6 on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020. The Apple Watch has never come close to rivaling the iPhone's popularity, but it does dominate the market for smartwatches. Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley estimates about 51 million Apple Watches will be sold this year, a 5% increase from last year. The new discount model, called the Apple Watch SE, will sell for $279 and be available beginning Friday. Apple watches have been selling for an average of $377, based on Walkley’s calculations.
Apple granted tariff exemption for Apple Watch
The U.S. Trade Representative has granted Apple's tariff waiver request for Apple Watch smartwatches, enabling Apple to import the finished devices from China without paying a 7.5% duty. Apple's request was approved in a letter posted to the USTR website dated Friday. The Apple Watch was one of Apple's products facing tariffs as part of what the USTR calls "List 4A," which went into effect last September. Apple said in its request, filed last fall, that the Apple Watch is a consumer electronic device and that it's not strategically important or related to China industrial programs. Apple also said that it hasn't found an alternative source for Apple Watches that would be able to meet demand for the product in the U.S.Apple applied for tariff waivers on other products including HomePod speakers, AirPods headphones, and iMac computers.cnbc.com
Apple's new connected gyms program gives you benefits for working out with Apple Watch
If you own an Apple Watch, you'll probably want to join an "Apple Watch Connected" gym if there's one nearby and you can afford it, since you'll receive benefits for owning one and working out. The Apple Watch Connected platform includes four tiers that must be supported by a gym that participates in the program. An Apple Watch Connected gym has to have an iPhone and Apple Watch app that lets people track their fitness, see classes and login at the gym. Gyms have to offer some sort of option for Apple Watch owners to "earn with Apple Watch." Crunch Fitness is launching Apple Watch Connected in two Manhattan gyms this week with more coming.cnbc.com
Apple Heart Study shows a lot of promise for digital health, but cardiologists still have questions
The researchers explained that Apple sponsored the study and owns the data, but the study data is stored at Stanford. Atrial fibrillation affects about 6 million people in the United States alone, and many do not know that they have it. Apple, for instance, has an electrocardiogram sensor baked into its Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5 devices to monitor the heart's rhythm and return health information directly to consumers. For the study, the researchers recruited more than 400,000 participants over eight months who had an Apple Watch. That is an astonishingly high number for a medical study.cnbc.com
The Apple Watch's secret weapon is its new price
But on Tuesday, it showed the Apple Watch is alive and well and laid out changes that may help it grow even more. The most compelling update is not a feature but the price: You can now buy an Apple Watch for $199. "A cheap price point for Apple Watch is important because a lot of the device's growth right now is coming from consumers who have never owned Apple Watch before. "The lower price Apple Watch 3 is a gateway to get people to commit," said Ramon Llamas, a research director at market data firm IDC. The Apple Watch originally appealed to luxury consumers, but the $200 price tag makes it more accessible to a larger audience.
An iPhone 11 Pro? What to expect at Apple's big event
Apple is expected to unveil new iPhones during a closely watched media event on Tuesday but don't expect anything foldable, 5G capable or radically different from the year before. (CNN) - Apple is expected to unveil new iPhones during a closely watched media event on Tuesday but don't expect anything foldable, 5G capable or radically different from the year before. At the event, which will take place in its Cupertino, California, headquarters, Apple will likely to show off three new high-end iPhones the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone 11 replacing its XS, XS Max and XR models, according to reports. Apple canceled AirPower, but a partner built something pretty close
Apple canceled its wireless charging mat, called AirPower, in March. It was supposed to charge an iPhone, AirPods and the Apple Watch at the same time. Mophie on Friday announced the 3-in-1 wireless charging pad that can wirelessly power AirPods, an Apple Watch and an iPhone at the same time. Unlike Apple's design, which appeared more seamless and would have allowed you to rest the Apple Watch on AirPower, Mophie's has a dedicated and traditional Apple Watch stand. The pad costs $139.95 and is available from Apple and Mophie's websites now, but will also be available in Apple Stores beginning next week.cnbc.com
Apple fixes Watch bug that let someone eavesdrop on your conversation
Apple reactivated the Walkie-Talkie feature on Monday in software updates for the iPhone and Apple Watch, 12 days after it was turned off for security reasons. Apple deactivated the Walkie-Talkie feature on the Apple Watch earlier this month after it was discovered that there was a security flaw that could enable an attacker to eavesdrop on an iPhone without permission. iOS 12.4 "includes a security fix for the Walkie-Talkie app on Apple Watch and re-enables Walkie-Talkie functionality," according to the software release notes. The Apple Watch release notes said it "provides important security updates including a fix for the Walkie-Talkie app." The feature enables people to directly contact another Apple Watch user through their watch, and was introduced last fall.cnbc.com
