The previous winter weather advisory has been beefed up to a winter storm warning for the counties below, shaded in pink. Winter Storm Warning for tonight and early Sunday morning for the pink shaded strip from Grand Rapids area to Saginaw Valley region. The winter storm warning covers Holland, Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Big Rapids, Alma, Mount Pleasant, Saginaw, Midland, Bay City, Caro and Bad Axe. South of the winter storm warning is a winter weather advisory for a mixture of snow, freezing rain and sleet. On the north side of the winter storm warning is a winter weather advisory for 3 to 5 inches of snow.

Ferris State was a major reason why the Chinese company was interested in building its new battery manufacturing plant in Big Rapids, Ferris State President Bill Pink said. The company is planning to build the plant at a site near U.S. 131 and the Big Rapids airport. At the event, Pink called the project a “once-in-a-century” collaboration for Big Rapids, Mecosta County and West Michigan. “The state has already invested significantly in developing these program areas and laboratories at Ferris State. “The location and community have been prepared for an opportunity like this to utilize the infrastructure, locally trained talent pool and outstanding resources from Ferris State University.

MECOSTA COUNTY, MI -- Police discovered three young children and a woman dead from gunshots in a home south of Big Rapids, with a man also wounded. Police, in a press release, did not divulge the ages of the children, but said they all were younger than 10. Mecosta County sheriff’s deputies responded to the home on a report of a man with a gun and shots fired. Deputies arrived at the scene and found the three children and woman dead from what appeared to be gunshot wounds, police said. NEWAYGO COUNTY, MI -- Two people died in an early morning house fire near Big Rapids. Newaygo County sheriff’s deputies said the victims are an 80-year-old man and a 68-year-old female. Firefighters responded to the fire about 5 a.m. and found the house fully engulfed in flames. Several fire departments responded to the fire, including the Big Rapids Fire Department, Big Prairie Fire Department and White Cloud Fire Department. Grand Valley State University earned a rematch with Ferris State University (10-0) after defeating Lindenwood 20-3 Saturday afternoon at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale. Ferris State, which earned a first-round bye this weekend, beat Grand Valley 35-28 when the two teams clashed in October. Here are five things to know about Grand Valley’s victory Saturday. Grand Valley led 10-0 after the first quarter, exchanged third-quarter field goals then iced it with a fourth-quarter touchdown. Grand Valley had the ball for 39 minutes, 10 seconds, compared to Lindenwood’s 20 minutes, 50 seconds.

Zak Ahern will head to Big Rapids after he graduates from Rockford High School. The Rams senior quarterback announced Tuesday on his Twitter account that he has committed to Ferris State University. Ahern elected to commit on Nov. 2 in honor of his grandmother, Gerri Ahern, who passed away on that date in 2008. With that being said, I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Ferris State University! He is enjoying another big fall after helping lead the Rams to the Division 1 state semifinals last season.

Brian Garlock is returning to Big Rapids Sunday, and he will be bringing the Stanley Cup with him. Garlock, a Big Rapids native who played four years with the Ferris State University hockey team, serves as the video coordinator for the Tampa Bay Lightning, which recently captured its second consecutive Stanley Cup. Ferris’ hockey Twitter account announced Wednesday that Garlock and the Cup will be at Buffalo Wild Wings Sunday from 4-8 p.m., and the public is invited. Garlock is a 2003 Big Rapids High School graduate, and he later served as an employee at Ferris’ ice arena. He will be available to sign autographs, and fans will be permitted to take photos with the Stanley Cup for only a $10 donation supporting local hockey.

MECOSTA COUNTY, MI -- A driver of a pickup truck allegedly fell asleep Tuesday afternoon, causing a crash with an SUV that killed a 52-year-old Big Rapids man, police said. The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 13 at Northland Drive at 11 Mile Road in Mecosta Township, Mecosta County sheriff’s deputies said. The driver of the Buick, a 54-year-old Big Rapids woman, had significant injuries and was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids hospital for treatment. The driver, a 35-year-old Morley man, told police he fell asleep and woke up when the crash happened. The pickup driver was not injured.

MECOSTA COUNTY, MI – Big Rapids police on Monday, June 14, arrested a woman for allegedly stabbing a man in the chest. Big Rapids Department of Public Safety responded to a 1:14 p.m. report of a possible stabbing in the 500 block of South State Street. He was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital. A 41-year-old woman who was identified as the suspect was arrested at the scene. She is held in Mecosta County Jail pending an initial court appearance.

Karyl Lee Addington was involved in a one-vehicle rollover crash on 205th Avenue near Arthur Road in Big Rapids Township on May 29, according to a news release from the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office. BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – A science professor at a Michigan university has been placed on administrative leave and is being investigated after denying the severity of the coronavirus and using racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic slurs on Twitter. David Eisler, president of Ferris State University, said Monday in a statement that Thomas Brennan was placed on leave Thursday for his “offensive" remarks. According to the newspaper's screenshots, Brennan tweeted anti-Semitic language and racist and homophobic slurs. Following the newspaper's report, Brennan said in a statement that he is not racist, anti-Sematic or a science denier. John Smith, a university spokesman, declined to say whether Brennan was placed on administrative leave in response to the professor’s tweets, his comments about COVID-19, or both.
