mlive.comRed Wings wrap up season seeking to avoid Central cellar
The Detroit Red Wings wrap up what has been one of the most bizarre seasons in NHL history tonight in Columbus, needing one point to avoid the Central Division cellar. The Red Wings are 6-4-3 in their past 13 games, due mostly to strong goaltending and solid defense. It figures be the final game in a Red Wings uniform for some players. Helm, 34, has the longest continuous service among Red Wings, having made his NHL debut on March 13, 2008. While the Red Wings and many other teams wrap up this weekend, the regular season continues through May 19 because of postponements caused by COVID protocol, particularly involving the Vancouver Canucks.

Blue Jackets hold on, defeat Red Wings 3-2 for their 1st win
“We’ve been more dangerously offensively the last two games, but we’ve given up too much," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. Texier's wraparound goal 5:10 into the final period put the Blue Jackets ahead for the first time. The Red Wings pulled Greiss with a few minutes left to add an extra skater. He had 65 goals and 93 assists over his first three seasons with the Blue Jackets. Mikko Koivu has not made his Blue Jackets debut because the 37-year-old center, who had spent his entire career in Minnesota, had to miss a third straight game.
How Red Wings stack up in realigned Central Division
The Detroit Red Wings can’t catch a break, whether it’s with the draft lottery or the NHL’s one-year divisional realignment prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Red Wings already had the reigning Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in their division. Former Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek has resurrected himself after a shaky final two years in Detroit. The Red Wings might slip ahead of the Blackhawks to avoid the Central basement, but even that could be a tough task considering how much ground they would need to make up. The NHL is embarking on a free agent period like never before in hockey history. A handful of the top free agents are still available, but NHL teams aren't waiting for those big fish to sign to make other moves. Koivu signed for $1.5 million for next season, and they need to re-up top center Pierre-Luc Dubois and other restricted free agents. Teams have to move money, and in order to move money, they might have to move some really good players.”Some good free agents found new homes Saturday. The Buffalo Sabres signed center Cody Eakin to a $4.5 million, two-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.

Red Wings Lose 5-4, Give Up 3 In The 3rd
The teams traded goals later in the period, but the Jackets held on for a 5-4 victory and a season-high three-game winning streak. Alexandre Texier, Cam Atkinson and Eric Robinson also scored for the Blue Jackets, and Joonas Korpisalo made 22 saves. Texier got the Blue Jackets on the board 5:37 into the first when he batted his own rebound from in front. Forty-four seconds later, Glendening put the Red Wings ahead 3-2 with a short-handed goal on an odd-man breakaway after the Blue Jackets turned over the puck at the blue line. Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno said he could tell it was going to be a big third period.
