BRAD HAWKINS

Michigan’s Brad Hawkins ‘frustrated’ by combine snub, but eager for NFL shot

But safety Brad Hawkins, a three-year starter for the Wolverines and third-team all-Big Ten selection in 2021, was curiously left off the list. That left Friday’s pro-day workout in Ann Arbor, an event overshadowed by a potentially fatal injury to linebacker David Ojabo, as as vital part of the defensive back’s portfolio to show NFL teams. “I just continue to keep my head straight and grind away.”In a way, that comment described Hawkins’ Michigan tenure prophetically. But there are questions about Hawkins’ sideline-to-sideline speed and his play in coverage, clouding his future at the NFL level. “It was really, as I see it, just one opportunity,” Hawkins said of Friday’s pro-day workouts.

2022 NFL Draft — Who might stay, who might go from Michigan

With bowl season in full swing and the 2022 NFL Draft just four months away, those hard conversations are already starting to be made. Here’s an early look at who might leave after this year, and who might stay, with our confidence level (on a 1-10 scale) for departure. The fifth-year graduate student has used up all of his college eligibility (even with the additional COVID year) and will certainly declare for the 2022 NFL Draft. Andrew Vastardis, a sixth-year graduate student and starting center, will likely give the NFL a shot after the 2021 season concludes. If he does, and it’s expected that he will, Haskins (who has until Jan. 17 to declare for the 2022 NFL Draft) has a good chance to be drafted.

Michigan football: Special teams shine, D.J. Turner, injury notes

— The lopsided result dampened many of the big moments on Saturday, but Michigan’s special teams unit accounted for several in the 59-18 win over Maryland. Then, as Maryland tried to make a game of it in the third quarter, Michigan pulled a trick out of its book on the ensuing kickoff. “You’ve got to highlight Trente Jones (on that); he was rolling out in front of A.J.,” Harbaugh said. It was Turner’s second interception of the season since taking over the starting role Oct. 23 against Northwestern. … Despite being available, Michigan opted not to play running back Blake Corum (ankle) and corner Gemon Green (undisclosed).

This time Michigan faced real adversity, and didn’t flinch

— Maybe Jim Harbaugh was on to something last week when he declared that his Michigan football team doesn’t flinch. Michigan squandered a 13-0 halftime lead and watched as the Cornhuskers scored 22 points in the third quarter alone. Not only did ninth-ranked Michigan have to deal with falling behind, but having to respond twice as part of a back-and-forth fourth quarter. Hawkins jumped on it, giving Michigan favorable field position and chance to win the game. This time it came in front of a raucous crowd of 87,380, facing real, tangible adversity for the first time all season.

Inside the strip fumble that helped Michigan beat Nebraska

— The emphasis all week in practice for the Michigan football team centered around Adrian Martinez. The dual-threat Nebraska quarterback posed plenty of challenges for a surging Wolverines defense — with his arm, his legs and play-making ability. “In practice all week, every single day, we practiced punching at the ball,” said Hawkins, who had five tackles and one for a loss. Both turnovers resulted in scoring drives for the Wolverines, a pair of field goals that proved to be the difference. Thanks to Hawkins and his turnover-forcing play, an “incredible play” head coach Jim Harbaugh would later say, they weren’t able to get another.

Michigan football still embracing underdog mentality despite hot start

Don’t tell Michigan defensive end Mike Morris that the Wolverines are big favorites against Rutgers on Saturday. The Wolverines embraced the underdog mentality before the season kicked off Sept. 4, and a dominating 3-0 start hasn’t changed that. “We know as soon as we lose one game, everyone’s gonna be like, ‘Michigan sucks again,’” Morris told reporters outside of Schembechler Hall on Monday. We don’t want that to happen again, so we’re just gonna continue to play with that chip on our shoulder. “I think It is just determination and drive,” Clinkscale said on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show Monday night.

Who are Michigan’s next NFL draft prospects? An early look at 2022

The 2021 NFL Draft is in the books, with Michigan continuing its streak of pro prospects. But let’s look ahead to 2022, Michigan’s top prospects at the moment and who might be eligible. Also of note, Hutchinson could be utilized a bit differently in Michigan’s new defensive scheme under first-year coordinator Mike Macdonald. Whether that helps or hinders his production remains to be seen, but could be a good thing for his NFL draft prospects. But a high-ankle sprain in ’19 slowed him and the COVID-19 pandemic shortened Michigan’s season to just six games in 2020.

Michigan’s secondary could benefit from change in defensive scheme

Don Brown’s aggressive, man-press defensive scheme was welcomed by his players because it put them in control of the game.
