Jenison Schools elementary closed temporarily after trace levels of asbestos-linked material found

JENISON, MI -- A Jenison Schools elementary is temporarily closed after work crews discovered traces of vermiculite, a material that can contain asbestos, at the building. Jenison Schools Superintendent Brandon Graham sent a letter to parents on Wednesday, Dec. 8 about the issue. He said workers with a construction contractor were at Sandy Hill Elementary, 1990 Baldwin St., in preparation for an upcoming improvement project. They discovered traces of vermiculite Wednesday during a routine process and notified school officials. Jenison Schools administrators say they immediately had the building’s air quality tested and found it to be safe.

Jenison High School principal selected as district’s next superintendent

JENISON, MI – Jenison Public Schools has chosen high school principal Brandon Graham as the district’s next superintendent. TenBrink is retiring after 18 years as superintendent, and 34 years total with Jenison Public Schools. TenBrink, who has spent 44 years in education, led Jenison Public Schools through an unprecedented school year marked by the coronavirus pandemic. Michigan students, struggling with online classes, saw more F’s on their report cards this year

Michigan students saw more Fs on their report cards than usual this year as many kids have struggled to keep up with online-only classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost one-third of students taking remote classes this fall failed at least one of their courses at the Ottawa County high school. The high school also asked any students who failed at least one online class this fall to take their classes in-person this semester. About 20% of elementary and middle school students and 35% of high school students failed at least one class in the first quarter. But at this point, it is unclear what level of learning loss Michigan students are facing.
