The Griffins, in Pickard’s absence, have been leaning on Victor Brattstrom, who has struggled in his first season in North America (7-14-3.

Pickard, 29, played six games for the Red Wings this past season and three more with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He recorded a 2-1-1 record, 3.16 goals-against average and 0.874 save percentage in Detroit. Pickard had a 1-1-1 record in Grand Rapids, 3.33 goals-against average and 0.882 save percentage. Entering his 10th professional season, Pickard also played 33 games for the Griffins in 2019-20, notching a 17-12-4 record, 2.86 goals-against average, 0.903 save percentage and three shutouts.

DETROIT (AP) Steve Yzerman is practicing patience in his first year as the Detroit Red Wings general manager. On the opening day of free agency, the Hockey Hall of Famer and former Red Wings great made some subtle moves to improve his roster without saddling the rebuilding franchise with big contracts. Detroit signed both center Valtteri Filppula and defenseman Patrik Nemeth to two-year , $6 million contracts and added goaltender Calvin Pickard with a two-year deal. The Red Wings have a core of young players, led by Dylan Larkin, to build around and a slew of prospects they hope are pushing for playing time in the NHL. Filppula, who helped Detroit win the 2008 Stanley Cup, played with Yzerman with the Red Wings and was signed by him in Tampa Bay.
