โ€˜Felt firsthand the venom of that mobโ€™: Where things stand as anniversary of Capitol siege approaches

The one year anniversary of the siege on the U.S. Capitol is in two days. Multiple people from Michigan are facing charges in connection with the attack.

โ€˜Labels matterโ€™ -- Michigan lawmakers push for stronger federal terrorism laws

LANSING, Mich. โ€“ Michigan is once again taking the lead on domestic terrorism across the country. The Homeland Security subcommittee on terrorism -- led by former CIA analyst and Department of Defense official Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin -- argued the U.S. should shift its focus from foreign terrorism to domestic. โ€œWhile external threats remain, the single greatest threat to our country right now is the threat of domestic terrorism and the tensions and polarization between us,โ€ Slotkin said. AdSlotkin cited a new Homeland Security threat assessment that detailed that 2020 was a perfect storm for radical domestic groups. โ€œOur government must send its own message back by labeling extremist violence as domestic terrorism.

Shelby Township man is 3rd from Michigan charged in connection with US Capitol attack

On Thursday, a Shelby Township man became the third person from Michigan to be charged in connection with the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. According to court documents, the FBI received a tip that Mels was at the Capitol during the attack. AdAfter searching the manโ€™s phone, the FBI found several photos from inside the Capitol, including a selfie of Mels. Mels was formally charged with knowingly entering a restricted building, in addition to violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. AdThe third man, 30-year-old Michael Foy from Wixom, was also charged for his role in the Jan. 6 attack.

Michigan Sen. Mike Shirkey appears to double down on Capitol โ€˜hoaxโ€™ conspiracy theory

WASHINGTON โ€“ Questions are being raised about the public apology sent out on Tuesday night by Michiganโ€™s highest-ranking Republican, State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey. READ: Top Michigan Republican stands by Capitol โ€˜hoaxโ€™ commentsShirkey apologized on Tuesday after a video was released of a Feb. 3 meeting in which he told Republicans that the siege at the Capitol โ€œwasnโ€™t Trump people. He claimed to believe it was a hoax. During Wednesday morningโ€™s Senate session, Shirkey appeared to double down on those beliefs in a side conversation that was caught on a nearby live microphone. Rep. Rashida Tlaib recounts past death threats in tearful Capitol riot speech on House Floor

The hearing, which detailed the most violent domestic attack on Congress in U.S. history, was emotional for some -- particularly for Rep. Rashida Tlaib from Michigan. Late Thursday night, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., led colleagues in an hourlong session in which Congress members shared their stories from that distressing day. โ€œAnd I feel bad for Alexandria (Ocasio-Cortez) and so many of my colleagues that were here,โ€ Tlaib said on the House Floor. During her Thursday speech, Tlaib called on members of Congress to rebuke hate speech and urged them do stop downplaying the insurrection. Tlaib isnโ€™t the only member of Congress -- and not even the only one from Michigan -- to receive death threats.

Wixom man charged in connection with US Capitol riot is due in court

Michael Foy, the Wixom man charged with attacking a Capitol police officer at the pro-Trump riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6., is expected in court on Monday. A video from the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol Building shows a man using a hockey stick as a weapon to strike a police officer who had been knocked to the ground. That video is one piece of evidence that led FBI agents to a condo in Wixom and Foy. โ€˜Michigan Capitol is not safeโ€™: AG Dana Nessel warns new ban on firearms not sufficient

LANSING, MICHIGAN - NOVEMBER 07: Armed Trump supporters take part in a demonstration at the Michigan State Capitol building on November 07, 2020 in Lansing, Michigan. I repeat-the Michigan Capitol is not safe,โ€ Nesselโ€™s tweet series concluded. After months of delay the Michigan State Capitol Commission finally put their authority to use and voted in favor of banning the open-carry of firearms inside the State Capitol. Those with concealed weapon permits are still allowed to carry firearms (concealed) into the State Capitol. The Michigan State Capitol Commission must take the next step and ban ALL firearms inside the State Capitol.

DOJ, FBI share update on criminal charges related to deadly Capitol siege

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 06: Pro-Trump supporters storm the U.S. Capitol following a rally with President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021 in Washington, DC. Trump supporters gathered in the nation's capital today to protest the ratification of President-elect Joe Biden's Electoral College victory over President Trump in the 2020 election. Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin and FBI Washington Field Office ADIC Steven Dโ€™Antuono discussed charges and arrests made in connection with the pro-Trump riot that shook the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. On Friday, Jan. 8, the DOJ announced that more than 50 people had been charged in connection to the deadly siege of the Capitol on Jan. 6. The FBI issued at least one other bulletin โ€” they go out to law enforcement nationwide on the topic โ€” before the riots last week.

Pramila Jayapal of Washington says she has tested positive. She criticized Republican members of Congress who declined to wear a mask when it was offered to them. (Graeme Jennings/Pool via AP)Lawmakers are proposing that members of Congress should be fined if they do not wear a face mask on Capitol grounds after several representatives tested positive for COVID-19 this week. The legislation comes after multiple lawmakers tested positive for the virus this week following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 -- a potential super-spreader event.

How to talk to your children about the deadly siege on the US Capitol Building

The riots in Washington, D.C. Wednesday that left five people dead were scary and unsettling to watch for many people across the nation. Let them know that what they see on screen does not necessarily reflect the real life thatโ€™s going on around them. Experts said if youโ€™re a parent who agrees with what happened then itโ€™s important to be candid. The bottom line is that itโ€™s an ongoing dialogue and a parent is the most important source of information for a child. Reports: FBI warns of possible armed protests at 50 state Capitols starting Jan. 16A memo from the FBI to law enforcement agencies across the United States is warning of possible armed protests at all 50 state Capitols starting Jan. 16, several outlets are reporting Monday.
