For Mexico ambush victims, there was no safety in numbers
Over the last few months, members of the close-knit Mormon community in this mountain hamlet began taking new precautions. Members of the Lebaron family view the burned car where family members were killed and burned during an ambush in Bavispe, Mexico. And largely out of fear, the Mormon community, which runs large pecan and pomegranate farms in this fertile river valley, has not challenged them. In exchange, cartel members warned them to stay home when they thought there might be violence. In 2009, assailants captured and killed two members of the group, including Benjamin LeBaron, a great-grandson of its founder.

He said there are thousands of fundamentalist Mormons in northern Mexico, although a reliable count has not been done. There are more than a million LDS Church members in Mexico, the largest number of adherents to the faith group after those in the United States.
