Washtenaw sheriff deputy accused of choking inmate pleads guilty
WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- A Washtenaw County deputy has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for assaulting an inmate, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Christopher Ellul was bound over to Washtenaw County Trial Court in August on one felony count of misconduct in office by a public official and one misdemeanor county of assault and battery. ANN ARBOR, MI – A Washtenaw County Sheriff’s deputy accused of using excessive force on a detained jail inmate is heading to trial. Ellul, 53, is accused of using excessive force while assisting in removing an inmate from his cell in the Washtenaw County Jail in late August 2020, officials said. Another deputy, Kenric Mukrdechian, was also arraigned on felony misconduct charges for a separate incident involving two female inmates. The case has been assigned to Washtenaw County Trail Judge Carrol Kuhnke with his first pretrial hearing scheduled for Sept. 21. Casperson and Simon debated the severity of Ellul’s action shown in Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office bodycam footage during Ellul’s Tuesday, July 28 preliminary hearing before Washtenaw County 14A District Court Judge Cedric Simpson. Schiappacasse testified that Ellul violated Washtenaw County Jail policy on neck holds and deadly force, as his hand contact with Green-Austin’s neck was not incidental. The commander agreed that it was tough to tell from that one image, but that the six seconds of relevant footage showed that Ellul grabbed Green-Austin’s neck.

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – The Michigan Attorney General Office’s Public Integrity unit has charged two Washtenaw County Sheriff’s deputies for felony misconduct. Ellul is accused of using excessive force while assisting in removing an inmate from his cell in the Washtenaw County Jail, officials said. Their current employment status with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is unknown. Additionally, Nessel’s public integrity unit issued charges against several other police officers outside of Washtenaw County. Deputy Scott Voit of the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was charged with one misdemeanor count of assault and battery and one felony count of misconduct in office by a public official.
