Red Wings 2022-23 schedule: Season-opener Oct. 14 vs. Montreal
The Detroit Red Wings will open the 2022-23 regular season on Oct. 14 against the Montreal Canadiens at Little Caesars Arena. The NHL schedule was released today, and Detroit will play 14 of its first 23 games at home as Derek Lalonde begins his tenure as head coach. The Red Wings will play 16 weekend home games (three Fridays, 11 Saturdays and two Sundays) and wrap up the season on the road April 13 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche make their lone appearance at LCA on March 18 (1 p.m.). The Red Wings host the Ottawa Senators in their traditional New Year’s Eve game on Dec. 31 (7 p.m.).

The Red Wings will host New Jersey Saturday at Little Caesars Arena Saturday and won’t play again until visiting Minnesota Dec. 23 because of the postponement. The NHL’s holiday break will begin after the game against Minnesota and conclude Dec. 26. Because of COVID, the NHL also postponed six Calgary Flames games as well as three Florida Panthers games.

Tanguay, 41, spent the last two years as an assistant coach with the AHL’s Iowa Wild. He replaces Dan Bylsma, who wasn’t retained after the season, on head coach Jeff Blashill’s staff.
