Oh no-no! Charting the record-breaking pace of Major League Baseball no-hitters

MLB pitchers have thrown six no-hitters in a span of just 41 days this season.

usatoday.com

MLB already has six no-hitters, including two in a 24-hour span. What’s going on?

Fewer balls in play equals fewer chances for the baseball gods to play a role in outcomes. And of the six no-hitters this year, four of them were either or two batters away from being a perfect game. That’s one oddity that is more difficult to figure out: Despite the glut of no-hitters, perfect games are rarer than ever. It’s been almost nine years since Mariners starter Felix Hernandez threw the last perfect game on Aug. 15, 2012. That’s the longest gap since the 13 years between Catfish Hunter’s perfect game in 1968 and Len Barker’s legendary game in 1981.

Opinion: With six no-hitters already this season, the feat is losing its importance

Tigers keep piling up strikeouts, get shut out and swept by Yankees

The month of May has not been any kinder to the Detroit Tigers than April. Corey Kluber breezed through eighth shutout innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 2-0 win and series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Tigers starter Jose Ureña followed the script he has used for much of the season: He threw strikes and kept the ball on the ground. Corey Kluber to throw today and nearly everyone (including the Tigers) will be watching

Today, he’s 34 years old and has made only eight starts in the last two seasons due to injuries. Kluber, currently a free agent, will throw a bullpen today in Florida in front of scouts to demonstrate his progress. If Kluber looks like he’s on track, he’ll probably command a salary higher than the Tigers want to pay. Kluber will turn 35 in April, and it’s likely he’d prefer to play for a contender, all things being equal. From the Tigers’ perspective, there’s plenty of affordable starting pitching on the market without Kluber’s injury baggage.
