DTE awards Ann Arbor nonprofit $270K grant
ANN ARBOR, MI -- An Ann Arbor nonprofit was one of eight recipients of a combined $1 million in grant funding awarded by DTE Energy Foundation to increase equity and opportunity. Ann Arbor-based Nonprofit Enterprise at Work, Inc., also known as NEW, was awarded $270,000 in grant funding to support its Advancing Racial and Social Justice program. The DTE Energy Foundation, the energy company’s philanthropic arm, awarded more than $1 million in grant funding to eight different nonprofits across Michigan. The DTE Foundation awarded nearly $19 million in grant funding during 2021. “It’s an honor to award these incredible organizations that continue to make a positive impact in our neighborhoods,” said Lynette Dowler, president of the DTE Foundation, in a statement announcing the grants.

The Community Foundation of Monroe County, along with donations from six community members, has raised more than $150,000 to meet needs in the community caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation organized a group of contributors that meet weekly, said Kathleen Russeau executive director of the foundation. There are “projects we are working on at the foundation,” Russeau said in an email. The foundation was awarded two grants, including one for $50,000 it received along with Catholic Charities of Monroe County from the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan to reduce overdose deaths in Monroe County.

The coronavirus pandemic has raised new financial and operational challenges for many industries and service areas, including organizations that provide domestic violence services. To combat the pandemic-related issues facing Michigan’s 45 domestic violence shelters, the DTE Energy Foundation announced Tuesday, Oct. 13, that it would be providing $1 million worth of grants to the state’s recognized shelters. That meant more opportunities for domestic violence and less opportunities to call for help. “That’s why we’re taking a stand and expanding our commitment to addressing the basic human needs of domestic violence survivors, including children, across Michigan." The DTE Foundation previously awarded $400,000 in grants to the state’s domestic violence shelters.

The first of two grants, The DTE Energy Foundation gifted $300,000 to recruit students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields as part of a new STEM Scholars Program. The coaches also are intended to serve as advocates for program students while promoting strategies for increased retention and completion. Along with STEM Scholars, the PASS Program will be formed in hopes of achieving at- risk student success. PASS will consist of a 50-student cohort of low-income, first-generation, minority or disabled students, Quartey said. Like STEM Scholars, students will be paired with a success coach to help them achieve their educational and career goals.

A local nonprofit agency known for helping women and children facing domestic violence is set to receive a grant. The DTE Energy Foundation recently announced a partnership with Michigan to distribute more than $400,000 in grants to 44 state-approved domestic violence shelters. Family Counseling Shelter Services of Monroe County has been designated as one of the recipients. Theres a great need for resources when it comes to (combating) domestic violence, Martin said. About 5,000 children and parents are housed in domestic violence shelters each year in the state, according to the foundation.
