Less than two weeks after restarting formula production at its Michigan facility, Abbott has again had to halt manufacturing there amid flooding.

Abbott Nutrition — which restarted the Sturgis, Mich., plant less than two weeks ago after a months-long closure helped trigger the crisis — said the storms overwhelmed the city’s stormwater system, and resulted in flooding in parts of the city, “including areas of our plant.”

Abbott's initial re-release of products will be available to consumers beginning around June 20, the company says. The facility was forced to close after a bacterial contamination at the site.

The factory at the center of the baby formula shortage will resume production Saturday, with another six to eight weeks before it should restock store shelves.

The infant formula recall is not only concerning but also a growing problem as the recall has recently expanded.

This baby formula recall is massive and concerning. Several products are affected. Infants have become sick with bacterial infections after consuming these products. The products under recall include Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare powdered infant formulas.

Officials say bacterial contamination has been detected in certain lots of Similac, Alimentum and EleCare.

The powder formulas were distributed across the country, and possibly exported to other countries, the FDA said.
