LANSING, MI - Michigan State University will accelerate transitioning all of its classes online beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18, after executive orders from the state limiting in-person classes. The university had initially intended to transition all operations online after the Thanksgiving holiday, MSU Spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said Monday, Nov. 16. At the University of Michigan, in-person learning is being restricted to “health care fields” from Wednesday, Nov. 18, through Friday, Nov. 20. UM noted about 90% of undergraduate classes in Ann Arbor already are being taught remotely. A gift shop in a performing arts center on Michigan State University's campus removed a display of dolls depicting black historical figures hanging from a rack after numerous people complained on social media. Additionally, after the Wharton Center reported the incident, it agreed to provide employees and volunteers with racial bias training that focuses on the impact and understanding of intentional and unintentional racial bias. Krystal Rose Davis-Dunn, a 31-year-old black graduate student at MSU, took in a jazz concert with a friend who wanted to check out the gift shop after the show. The incident happened in a facility named after Clifton R. Wharton, a black man and former Michigan State University president, Reed-Davis said. The Wharton Center gift shop issue is bigger than "black people hanging from trees," Davis-Dunn said.

Michigan State Clears Ex-Basketball Players In Rape Case
Three former Michigan State University mens basketball players have been cleared of wrongdoing in connection with allegations that they sexually assaulted a female student in 2015, according to the school. A report from a school-launched Title IX investigation did not find violations of university policy, spokeswoman Emily Guerrant told the Lansing State Journal for a story Saturday. The other two players told investigators the sex was consensual. The accuser, Bailey Kowalski also accused counseling center staff at the East Lansing school of discouraging her from reporting the rape. She filed a lawsuit in 2018 against Michigan State and the players who were not identified in the suit.

Michigan State University professor suspended due to sex harassment complaints
EAST LANSING, Mich. - A Michigan State University physiology professor who was suspended after more than half a dozen women accused him of sexual harassment has returned to work at the school that has been beset by allegations of sexual misconduct in recent years. Robert Wiseman, who teaches at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, was suspended without pay from Feb. 22 through April 4, school spokeswoman Emily Guerrant told the Lansing State Journal in a story published Tuesday. Wiseman started working at the East Lansing school in 2001, and the allegations against him date back to 2002, according to the report. The report said Wiseman told investigators the allegations by the women were not specific and he denied acting inappropriately. The complaints against Wiseman were just the latest in a series of sexual assault allegations at Michigan State.
Michigan State says Sparty costume is too hot for parades
EAST LANSING, Mich. Michigan State University says the school's Sparty mascot will no longer participate in most parades due to concerns about heat stroke or other health issues for those wearing the costume. School spokeswoman Emily Guerrant says in an email the MSU Alumni Office made the decision "due to health concerns for Sparty and his team." The Lansing State Journal says Sparty still is expected to participate in MSU's annual Homecoming Parade in East Lansing unless the weather conditions pose health risks.
