The Detroit Red Wings are parting ways with Frans Nielsen. The move saves the Red Wings $1 million in cap space and more importantly a roster spot. The Red Wings have $6.55 million of dead cap space next season due to buyouts of Nielsen and, in 2020, Justin Abdelkader, who will remain on the books through 2025-26. With Nielsen’s impending buyout and Luke Glendening signing a two-year, $3 million contract with Dallas last month, the Red Wings will need two new alternate captains. Valtteri Filppula on Wednesday was the latest veteran the Detroit Red Wings waived to gain roster flexibility.
