Norway puts down Freya the walrus that drew Oslo crowds
Authorities in Norway said Sunday they have euthanized a walrus that had drawn crowds of spectators in the Oslo Fjord after concluding that it posed a risk to humans. The 600-kilogram (1,320-pound) female walrus, known affectionately as Freya, became a popular attraction in Norway in recent weeks, despite warnings from officials that people should refrain from getting close and posing for pictures with the massive marine mammal. Freya liked to clamber on small boats, causing damage to them.

Freya, an 883-pound great white shark, has made quite the journey in the past few months. The hefty great white was first tagged in Onslow Bay off North Carolina on March 26. “Like many white sharks, Freya is continuing her way North!” the organization wrote in a Facebook post on Monday, when the creature was swimming around the Block Island Sound off of Montauk, New York. Unlike Freya, though, the shark that was spotted wasn’t a great white. The second-largest living fish in the ocean next to the whale shark, basking sharks are often mistaken for great whites.
