Former Detroit Piston Darvin Ham named new Los Angeles Lakers coach
Former Detroit Piston and Saginaw High Trojan forward Darvin Ham will become the new head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, according to an ESPN report. Ham, who played at Saginaw High and Texas Tech, owns NBA championships as a player and assistant coach. He also was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks staff during the 2020-21 NBA Championship season. Former Detroit Piston forward Darvin Ham is once again considered a front-runner for a vacant NBA head coaching job, adding the Los Angeles Lakers to the teams that have put him on the list of head coaching candidates. The Lakers, who fired head coach Frank Vogel after the 2021-22 season, received permission from the Milwaukee Bucks to interview the Saginaw High graduate for their head coaching position, according to the Los Angeles Times. Ham, who was an assistant for the Lakers under Phil Jackson and Mike Brown, is one of several rumored candidates expected to interview with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. Ham, who owns championships as a player and coach, was among the coaches considered for head coaching jobs in 2021 for Washington, Indiana and the Los Angeles Clippers. Ham is 1-2 as a head coach after filling in this season when Budenholzer was put into the NBA’s Covid-19 protocol.
