Jerjuan Howard has transformed a vacant building in his childhood Detroit neighborhood into the Howard Family Bookstore, which opened in May 2026.

At the corner of Puritan Avenue and Lesure Street on Detroit’s west side, an abandoned building is being rewritten into something new: a neighborhood bookstore and café.
