But Flowers has just nine sacks in two seasons and Detroit has continued to trot out one of the worst pass rushes in the league. He was given a four-year, $22.6 million deal that made him one of the 15 highest-paid tight ends in the league in 2019.

ALLEN PARK -- Jesse James was one of the worst signings of the Bob Quinn era. The Lions have decided to release James, according to ESPN, as they continue to trim costs heading into free agency next week. Detroit isn’t saving that much money by cutting James -- about $2.1 million, while taking on about $4.3 million in dead money -- but he just wasn’t that good. The Lions were desperate for tight ends back in 2019 and inked James to a four-year, $22.6 million deal. With that, James will go down as one of the worst signings of the Bob Quinn era.

The top of the tight end rotation is locked up, but the depth behind Hockenson remains a concern. He’s a potential matchup nightmare; just don’t ask him to block or do other traditional tight end duties yet. And while eyes will fixate on Hunter Henry and his connection to offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, the Chargers tight end is expected to cash in as the top tight end on the market. Campbell was the Saints tight end coach and assistant head coach for five seasons before landing in Detroit. Burton did a little bit of everything in Indy’s deep tight end room.

Dan Campbell, a former 10-year NFL tight end, is Detroit’s new head coach and could see something to work with, though. Hockenson, on the other hand, emerged as one of the better tight ends in the league. Hockenson ranked 12th among tight ends with enough snaps to qualify in the run-blocking department per Pro Football Focus. ESPN ranks Long fifth among this year’s tight end class and PFF ranked him fifth among Power 5 tight ends, getting solid blocking marks to go along with his production. It’s hard to imagine the Lions using a pair of first-round picks on tight ends in just three years.

They fired general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia while elevating Bevell, their offensive coordinator, to interim coach. But the Lions turned things around down the stretch, sending the Bears (5-7) to their sixth straight loss. The Lions came out on top after losing four of five, and Stafford gave Bevell the game ball.

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions reportedly hosted tight ends Jerrell Adams and Khari Lee for tryouts, according to Thursday’s transaction wire. The Lions are pretty set at the top of the tight end room, thanks to T.J. Hockenson’s blossoming play. On the other hand, Nauta offers some positional flexibility and familiarity in Year 2, but that’s about it to this point for the other Lions tight ends. ALLEN PARK -- Jesse James entered last week’s game in Arizona without a catch, let alone a target to his name. James made a 15-yard catch on third-and-1 and later caught a 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1 to give the Lions a 10-7 lead. First-year Lions tight ends coach Ben Johnson echoed that sentiment on Tuesday, saying the team would throw to James no matter the situation. We have no hesitation to go ahead and throw him the ball and know that he’s going to come through for us. He’s (Hockenson) done a really nice job in man-to-man situations right now, being able to create separation, and I think he’s really confident in his ability to get open.

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions (1-2) are back in the win column after a 26-23 win on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. But there’s no doubt Detroit’s playcalling becomes more conservative in the second half, especially when it holds the lead. That’s especially true for a team built like the Lions, whose strength is passing and especially downfield passing. Well, maybe “Star Wars.” The man really, really loves “Star Wars.” (Thanks again for recommending “The Mandalorian,” Coach. Detroit really confused the young cornerback with all the varied looks and muddied passing lanes.

Even though Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia had to wait 11 months to experience the thrill of victory, he insisted relief didn’t describe his feelings. “I don’t ride the roller coaster,” Patricia said Monday, a day after ending an 11-game losing streak at Arizona. They prepared for their road game against the Kyler Murray-led Cardinals amid questions about how much longer Patricia would keep his job. 3 overall, appeared to leave the game at Arizona at least twice because he was winded. “He just has to settle down and keep working on his conditioning to get back out there and be out there when needed,” Patricia said.

The Lions quarterback was sacked four times, and the running game was ineffective, with 27 attempts for 90 yards. Kenyan Drake ran 18 times for 73 yards while Murray took off five times for 29 yards and the score. Kyler Murray was erratic, and those three turnovers were massive in helping the Lions overcome settling for four field goals.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Matt Prater made a 39-yard field goal as time expired, Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes and the Detroit Lions snapped an 11-game losing streak dating to last season by beating the Arizona Cardinals 26-23 on Sunday. Stafford calmly led the Lions downfield, Prater connected on his fourth field goal of the afternoon and the Lions finally got to celebrate a victory. Arizona's Kyler Murray threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score, but he also had three interceptions. Six plays later, the Lions took a 10-7 lead when Stafford hit Jesse James for a 5-yard score. The 35-year-old Peterson, who is in his 14th NFL season, played six games for the Cardinals in 2017.

Tight end Jesse James just might go down as the worst free-agent contract of the Bob Quinn era. James got a four-year deal that averages $5.65 million annually, which is top-20 money for a tight end. James and playcaller Darrell Bevell had a heart-to-heart this offseason about what went wrong there, and Bevell promised to get him more involved. Of course, tight ends do a lot more than just catch passes, but James' blocking has been about average. Fox added shots of 50 yards (0-yard return), 52 yards (fair catch) and 45 yards (landed right on the sideline at the 10).

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia showed up for work a day after his free-falling team lost again in front of an apathetic home crowd. The Lions (3-10-1) have lost seven in a row for the first time in seven years and 10 of 11 under Patricia. WHATS WORKINGThe Lions do not seem to be giving up on Patricia or their teammates. James had a season-high 31 yards receiving, and matched a season high with three receptions against Tampa Bay. Benenoch started 22 games from 2016-18 for Tampa Bay.
