Vikings face abrupt finish, roster churn after all that fun
The end hit harder for the Minnesota Vikings than usual, a season of exhilarating finishes and exceeded expectations smudged by this quick exit from the playoffs. The salary cap crunch will likely force the departure of some of the players who contributed heavily to 13 wins, an NFC North division title and a strong chemistry that fueled this run behind new head coach Kevin O'Connell. “We have such a great group, and you know when the season ends that this group doesn’t stay the same moving forward,” quarterback Kirk Cousins said after the 31-24 loss to the New York Giants at home on Sunday in the first round.

Hopefully, we can step up and do well, build some chemistry.”Walman has a team-leading plus-12 rating in just 18 games. “When he did it the first time, I had him on my fantasy football team, so I was pumped up. “My biggest thing coming into the season was to really establish myself and be a big part. I think doing that is helping the team win.”He also will get a look on the power play.

He stepped in there and I’ll tell you what, he’s cool, he’s calm, he’s collected, he’s making these throws.

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have listed two starting cornerbacks as questionable for their game on Sunday against Justin Jefferson, the second-leading receiver in the NFL, and the Minnesota Vikings. Jeff Okudah was listed as questionable because of an illness that knocked him out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday, although he did return to practice on Friday and is trending toward playing. Receiver Kalif Raymond (illness) and backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld (illness) are also questionable, while guard Evan Brown (ankle) is doubtful. Linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee), guard Kayode Awosika (ankle) and cornerback Chase Lucas (hamstring) have already been ruled out. mlive.comLions aim to replicate tough task of containing Vikings WR Justin Jefferson
Just in my own opinion, I think he’s, if not the best receiver, he’s one of the top two. I think he’s tough. I think he’s competitive. So if you’re not locked in, like every play on this player, he’s going to beat you. “I mean, he’s competitive, he’s tough, he can run every route, the tree’s long.

How CB Jeff Okudah’s lockdown play allows Detroit Lions to mold defensive identity
ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah has earned a ton of praise for his lockdown coverage through the team’s first three games. Okudah allowed seven catches for only 63 yards through the first two games, per PFF. He was docked for surrendering five total catches for 43 yards in coverage during last week’s loss. “So, from that regard he’s really -- he’s really come a long way. It’s going to be a nice battle.”The Tacoma News Tribune reports Metcalf wasn’t impressed with Okudah’s recent play, saying: “He’s got a safety behind him.
mlive.comSnap counts, PFF grades: Lions’ Alim McNeill flashes pass-rush chops with increased role
The Detroit Lions have talked about finding new ways to use interior defender Alim McNeill, especially after adding beef to the rotation in Isaiah Buggs and Benito Jones. McNeill saw an increase in snaps during Detroit’s 28-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. Aidan Hutchinson’s snaps dipped while dealing with his thigh/quad injury, with the prized rookie still seeing 79% of the defensive work. Jones played 13 snaps while Buggs handled much of the work inside with McNeill moving around. The Lions averaged 4 yards per carry and didn’t allow a sack, while Jared Goff ate only two hits.
mlive.comInside the locker room: How the Vikings adjusted with Lions stifling WR Justin Jefferson
Justin Jefferson is one of the best wide receivers in the game, not to mention a focal point of the Minnesota Vikings’ attack. So, when the Detroit Lions focused on stifling the third-year star receiver, the Vikings had to turn elsewhere. Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah had a strong game in dealing with Jefferson most of the way. Jefferson was held to three catches and 14 yards in Minnesota’s 28-24 win against the Detroit Lions in Week 3. “They were doing some things schematically to take away Justin,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said.

D’Andre Swift left his mark on last week’s game despite playing 15 fewer snaps and 11 touches than the previous week. He played 12 snaps out of the slot in Week 1, then drew 28 reps inside last week, so the new-look Vikings are moving him around all over the field. In only four games against the Lions, Jefferson has 30 catches for 503 yards and one touchdown.

detroit.cbslocal.comThe Nine: Could LSU WR Ja’Marr Chase fall to the Lions in NFL draft?
Editor’s note: With the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions select ... a receiver? That honor goes to Ja’Marr Chase, which goes a long way toward explaining why Chase is considered by so many to be the top receiver in a top-heavy receiver class. Why he doesn’t make senseOf course if Chase does go WR1, the Lions might never have a chance at him anyway. What he saysOn outshining Justin Jefferson at LSU: “I enjoyed Justin playing this year, he had a great season (in Minnesota). Goff will need some help if he’s to sort himself out, and there is no better help at the receiver position in this draft than Ja’Marr Chase.
mlive.comFlorida TE Kyle Pitts blows up pro day, intrigued by fit with Detroit Lions
ALLEN PARK -- The great tight end debate is already raging in Detroit, where the Lions have already spent two top-10 picks on tight ends since 2014 and three first-round picks on tight ends since 2009. No other team in the league has come close to making that kind of investment in the tight end position. And his pro day proved that, when he ran a preposterous 4.44-second 40-yard dash. “I think he’s an elite wide receiver and I think he’s an elite tight end,” Florida coach Dan Mullen said after the Gators’ pro day on Wednesday. At his pro day, he showed why when he blistered the 40 in 4.44 seconds.

(AP Photo/Gerald Herbert, File)The NCAA football oversight committee is asking the associations Board of Governors to avoid making a decision later this week on whether to conduct fall championships as college sports tries to find a path to play through the pandemic. The board could decide to call off NCAA championship events in fall sports such as soccer, womens volleyball and lower-division football. The NCAA has no authority to postpone or cancel specific seasons, a decision that would be up to individual schools or their conferences.
