County backs London Twp. grant to extend water lines

Monroe County commissioners are giving their nod to London Township seeking a $5 million state grant to extend water from the City of Monroe to 640 residences and 1,500 people in the township. The grant would provide a “more manageable financial commitment from township residents” and help bring “clean, reliable and safe drinking water” to residents, the resolution said. Milan Council explores new location for fire department

The Milan Area Fire Department includes the City of Milan, Milan Township, part of London Township and part of York Township. Milan City Council heard about the proposal during a regular meeting recently. For years, the fire department has dealt with trains blocking Wabash Street as fire trucks headed south into Milan Township. "The issue isn’t the condition of the building," Hamden replied, referring to the present fire hall close to Milan’s downtown.monroenews.com
Milan man arrested for carjacking
A 35-year-old Milan man was arrested in connection with carjacking a red, four-door 2009 Chevrolet Aveo and injuring the driver in London Township Thursday afternoon. The vehicle theft occurred in the 14000 block of Wanty Rd. and the driver called 911. The woman told deputies the suspect allowed her to drive the car and then he fled the area. Deputies lodged the suspect in the county jail on charges of carjacking and giving a false identification, the report said.monroenews.com

County okays 11 farmland agreements in London Twp.
Nearly a dozen farmland preservation agreements in London Township hoping to avoid a possible special assessment for bringing city water into the area got the nod of Monroe County commissioners this week. The county board can review, comment or make recommendations on the applications under a 1994 state law, said Jeff McBee, community planning and engagement director for the county. Commissioner David Hoffman said the Monroe Conservation District Board also reviews the applications. The township planning commission will revise the plan, Ash Township Clerk Michele Geiermann said in a letter to commissioners. Upon completion, the plan will be forwarded to the county board for any comments prior to submitting to the township board for final approval, McBee saidmonroenews.com

LONDON TOWNSHIP - Aretta Schils and Michael Pinkowski make for an odd pairing. Schills, 77, has lived in London Township for 40 years. Just an hour into their second day, Schils estimated theyd already gathered roughly 250 signatures. The pair organized their event in response to information sessions held inside the town hall and hosted by fellow London resident Barb Odneal, who organized the community group known as London Township Residents Safe Water Initiative. The appeal has been assigned to Circuit Judge Michael Weipert; no hearing date has been set. A recall effort against London Township Trustees Penny Turner and Roger Werstein has stalled due to an appeal filed by the two trustees to Monroe County Circuit Court. The petition drive cannot be circulated once the appeal has been filed, County Clerk Sharon Lemasters said. Slavicek said he received a letter this week from a Monroe legal firm of Godfroy, Wetzel and Horkey representing the trustees that an appeal had been filed. A recall petition against London Township Supervisor Gary Taepke has been withdrawn by Monroe County Clerk Sharon Lemasters. The petition was one of the recall items to be considered at a hearing Thursday before the Monroe County Board of Election Commissioners. The Michigan Election Law clearly prohibits the filing of a recall petition against an official, after the official survives a recall attempt during that term, he said. Part of Ostrander Rd. closed for culvert work
The affected area is between Gramlich and Palmer Rds. LONDON TOWNSHIP Ostrander Road between Gramlich and Palmer Rds. was closed Monday due to replacement of a culvert crossing under Ostrander by the Monroe County Drain Commissioners office. Due to the nature of the work, no through traffic will be allowed, said Brian J. Wilhelm from the Monroe County Road Commission.
