Manchester will take next step toward cityhood in November election

MANCHESTER, MI - When residents in the western Washtenaw County village of Manchester head to the ballot box in November, they’ll be making choices that could shape the village’s path to cityhood. They’ll do that by electing a City Charter Commission, a nine-member body charged with drafting the would-be city’s charter, the foundational document defining the organization and powers of local government. The drafted charter must be reviewed by the Michigan Governor’s Office and be approved in a local election by a majority of Manchester village voters as well. In Michigan, cities and townships are the two primary units of local government, and Manchester village acts as a sub-unit of Manchester Township. Manchester will be releasing more information on the City Charter Commission election in its newsletter, Vailliencourt said, adding residents can also ask questions at the Manchester Village Council’s regular meetings, where time is reserved for updates on the process.
