Michigan State survives High Point to close non-conference season with win
The Spartans pulled away in the final seven minutes to put away High Point, 81-68, on Wednesday at the Breslin Center. Michigan State was playing without two starters in Marcus Bingham and Max Christie, plus reserve guard Pierre Brooks, after all three tested positive for COVID-19. Michigan State didn’t lead by more than seven points in the first 33 minutes, until their shooting at last came to the rescue. That started a 14-5 Michigan State run that put the game away at last. Michigan State will now resume Big Ten play with a Sunday game at Northwestern.

DETROIT – That Michigan State opened the game with a 3-pointer from its shooter who was struggling the most turned out to be a sign of things to come. By the time Michigan State was done, his resurgent game was only part of the Spartans’ breakout offensive night. “Scoring the ball is always our plan, to get a lot of shots up, play fast,” Spartans point guard Tyson Walker said. Once that happened, the lob was open underneath, and Michigan State took advantage of it often. Kampe said Oakland’s path to victory included forcing Michigan State to commit a high number of turnovers.

Basketball players, meanwhile, have scores of leagues around the world available to them. If I’m voting today, Walker gets my vote as the most improved Michigan State player since the start of the season. I may be in the minority, but I think there’s a good chance he turns things around the second half of the year. -- MaximilianA: I think there’s still more improvement to be made offensively outside of just holding on to the ball. –Drunk Bill WaltonA: I’ve been surprised at the seeming lack of NIL deals for basketball players other than autographs and Cameo.

The name, image and likeness policy that the NCAA adopted this past June is enabling the Grand Rapids Catholic Central boys basketball program to bring back some blasts from the recent past. The defending Division 2 state champion Cougars are hosting the Catholic Central Alumni Basketball Camp Saturday at the high school, and five players from the Cougars’ 2018 state runner-up team, who are now all playing collegiate basketball, are headed home this weekend. “We decided with the NIL and being what it is for college athletes we would bring five of our former players back, and our players were really excited to do it,” Catholic Central basketball coach TJ Meerman said. Catholic Central advanced to the state finals before losing to Benton Harbor 65-64 in the finals in overtime. “We had some pretty sweet camp shirts made, and we fashioned them off the old Detroit Pistons shirts that had Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer and all of those guys,” Meerman said.

EAST LANSING – The Michigan State player who first became known for his dance moves and other sideline antics enters year four with a new mindset. He also nearly let his basketball gifts slip away by not taking the sport seriously until late in his high school career. His road from there to the cusp of a college degree and the opportunity to be a key player for Michigan State is one Bingham takes no shortage of pride in. Bingham said he can’t pinpoint a moment when he chose a different path from the one he started high school on. It’s not only helped me in basketball but in life.”As a junior, Bingham was once again in and out of the starting lineup.
