MATT SCHEMBECHLER

Ex-Michigan football player Jon Vaughn has some thoughts on Bo Schembechler’s legacy

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jon Vaughn still can recall the first team meeting with Bo Schembechler. It was the summer of 1988, Vaughn’s first year on the football team, and the legendary coach brought the roster together for a speech. Vaughn has detailed his experiences at Michigan before, alleging that Anderson sexually abused him during each of his estimated 10 to 12 visits to see the doctor. “This is not about us versus Bo,” Vaughn said. Two other former Michigan football players, Daniel Kwiatkowski and Gilvanni Johnson, both said they were abused by Anderson and told Schembechler, too.

Former Michigan student blames AD Don Canham: ‘He did nothing’ about ex-doctor

Anderson, he told Goldman, would need to write a referral to see a specialist at the hospital. “I went into Don Canham’s office, said ‘Something’s wrong,’ and he sat there and stood at me (and) said nothing,” Goldman said. He reported the incident to Schembechler, Goldman said, who again told him to see Canham. Matt Schembechler says he told his father about the incident and claims Canham promptly fired Anderson, only for Bo Schembechler to reinstate him. “However, Don Canham, as at the athletics director, had the power way back in the ’60s.

Dozens gather at University of Michigan, demand full investigation into Dr. Anderson

People gathered Wednesday morning outside Michigan Stadium to demand the University of Michigan launch a full investigation into the allegations of sexual abuse committed by the late Dr. Robert Anderson.

Wife, son: ‘Bo had a clear and compelling sense of right and wrong’

Family members of the late Bo Schembechler came to his defense this week, issuing a clear rebuke of allegations that the legendary Michigan football coach was made aware of sexual abuse allegations involving Dr. Robert Anderson. “To the contrary, in our steadfast opinion, Bo was not aware of such conduct and assumed that any procedures were medically appropriate. “If Bo had known of inappropriate conduct, we are certain that he would have stopped it immediately, reported it, and had Dr. Anderson removed from the University,” the letter continues. “Our experiences tell us that the Bo Schembechler that we knew would never have tolerated any abuse or mistreatment of his players, his staff, or any other individual,” the letter reads. Yearly physicals by family doctors, or athletic physicals by a University doctor were the same physicals as performed by the United States military.

Ex-Michigan players want apology from school; Bo’s son says statue should come down

More: Jim Harbaugh’s defense of Bo prompted Michigan teammate to disclose sexual abuse“It wasn’t just Bo Schembechler that allowed that predator to persist for all them years,” Kwiatkowski said. They were made to feel shamed and embarrassed, and all three said they told Bo Schembechler at different points of his legendary coaching career at Michigan. “From this point forward, make sure that none of these kids — kids that come in for camps, kids that come in to play for Michigan — are assaulted again,” said Johnson, who played at Michigan from 1982 to 1986. “They threw a blanket apology, but (I want) an apology for us — the victims,” Johnson said. As for the statue and building name, Schembechler told MLive after the news conference that he could not be more apathetic with what the university decides.

Grappling With the Tarnished Legacies of Former Icons

An advisory committee at the University of Michigan has recommended that the university remove the name of Fielding Yost from the university’s ice arena. He was foundational to the success of Michigan athletics, credited with leading the Michigan football team to four straight national championship wins from 1901-04. On Thursday, former Michigan football player Matt Schembechler came forward saying that former team doctor Robert E. Anderson molested him and other teammates. Sports writer John U. Bacon and Professor Hilary Green say the answer is not as simple as removing names from monuments. Bacon emphasizes the importance of addressing Yost’s racist legacy, but he says removing Yost’s name from the ice arena is a complicated matter.
