Detroit Lions feeling good about direction of young defensive backfield

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions were starting two undrafted rookies at cornerback at one point last season. Add in the ultimate wildcard in cornerback Jeff Okudah, and it’s easy to see why the Lions are feeling good about the direction of their defensive backfield. I’ve never been afraid of a challenge,” Lions defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant said. “I think he’s been more aggressive, and I like that side of him. “I think that’s what he does best.

‘The grass is not always greener:’ Lions GM Brad Holmes defends free-agent approach

He gets why some people might not understand why he would prioritize bringing back so many players from a three-win team. If you watched the games last season, you don’t need anyone to tell you what you already know. But if you watched the games last season, you also understand just how much attrition there was all over the field. While this approach certainly won’t push the Lions over the top, they also believe it’s the right approach for the long-term health of the rebuild. “He’s got legit speed, he’s got size, he’s got length, he’s got ball skills.”

Ex-Lions OL Cornelius Lucas re-signing with Washington Commanders for 2 years

Cornelius Lucas got his start with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted rookie back in 2014. According to his agency, Lucas is re-signing for $8.2 million over two years. The 6-foot-8 tackle started seven games at right tackle in 2021, after starting eight games at left tackle the previous season. He arrived in Allen Park as an undrafted tackle out of Kansas State. Lucas signed with the Los Angeles Rams, where he started the only game he appeared in with the team.

CB Mike Hughes, a former first-round pick, thinks the Detroit Lions coaching staff can take him to next level

ALLEN PARK -- Cornerback Mike Hughes was a first-round bust in Minnesota, and there’s no changing that now. But Hughes did stay healthy for the Chiefs last season, and turned in the best season of his career. And when it came time to choose which team gave him the best opportunity to make that jump, he chose the Detroit Lions. “I think it was the perfect opportunity for me to come in and try to compete for a spot,” Hughes said. Minnesota traded Hughes to Kansas City after the season, packaging him with a seventh-round pick while receiving just a sixth-round pick in return.

Report: Detroit Lions signing ex-Ravens linebacker, special teams standout Chris Board

The Detroit Lions are signing linebacker Chris Board to a one-year deal per the NFL Network. He’s developed into a key special teams player. Board’s 11 tackles on special teams were among the most in the league last season. The Lions reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with former first-round cornerback Mike Hughes. “He’s becoming a really good inside linebacker,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of Board at one point.

CB Mike Hughes, a former first-round pick, reportedly signing with Detroit Lions

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are adding some experience at cornerback, where they’ve inked Mike Hughes to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million according to ProFootballFocus. Hughes was taken 30th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, although never lived up to the hype. With that, Minnesota elected to trade Hughes to Kansas City last year, packaging him with a seventh-round pick for a sixth-round pick. Hughes started just five games for the Chiefs, but did play in all 17 and allowed just 46 catches on 75 targets. Hughes is still just 25 years old, although that makes him one of the oldest cornerbacks in Detroit.

Rodgers at ease as Packers roll past Vikings 43-34

Davante Adams was predictably the biggest beneficiary, with a career-high, franchise-record-tying 14 catches for 156 yards and two scores. Aaron Jones rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown for the Packers, who posted their highest score against the Vikings since a 44-31 victory at the Metrodome on Oct. 27, 2013. Jaire Alexander, who also recorded a safety on an untouched cornerback blitz in the second quarter, made the bobbling interception. When LG Lucas Patrick (shoulder) was forced out in the second quarter, Jenkins moved back to his original spot and free agent addition Rick Wagner entered at RT. ... DT Kenny Clark (groin) was hurt in the second quarter during Alexander's interception and didn't return.

Vikings Defense Suffocates Lions 20-7

Minnesotas long-dominant defense had been slipping for the past several weeks, a proud and seasoned group that needed to get its edge back. The Vikings gave hardly any ground against the sputtering Detroit Lions. Danielle Hunter had three of Minnesotas five sacks to spearhead a resurgence by the defense, and the Vikings sailed past Detroit 20-7 on Sunday to stick the Lions with their sixth straight loss. The Lions entered the week averaging 5.8 yards per play, the fourth-best in the NFL, but the Vikings held them to 3.2. The previous time the Vikings were beaten at home by the Lions at any point during the second half of the schedule was on Dec. 14, 1997.

Police sergeant testifies he was told to tone down 'gayness'

- A St. Louis County police sergeant has testified that he was told to "tone down his gayness" to secure a promotion to lieutenant. Keith Wildhaber testified at trial Tuesday that former St. Louis County Police Board of Commissioners member John Saracino issued the guidance in 2014. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Wildhaber says the remark made him feel like he had "been punched in the gut." He testified that he thought he would be evaluated for the position based on his body of work, "not the fact that I was gay." County Counselor Mike Hughes says the reason Wildhaber was passed over for promotion had nothing to do with his sexual orientation.
