NYPD officer in 'chokehold' video had prior brutality case
In this photo taken from police body cam video, New York Police officers arrest a man on a boardwalk Sunday, June 21, 2020, in New York. The police department moved quickly to suspend Officer David Afanador without pay after Sunday's confrontation on the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach in Queens. In that case, Afanador was seen on video using his gun to hit a 16-year-old boy during a marijuana bust. I put out the body camera footage yesterday and I think it tells a very different story than the initial video, Shea said. The speed with which the NYPD suspended Afanador stood in sharp contrast to the drawn-out police disciplinary process of years past.

NYPD officers buy shoplifter groceries instead of arresting her
NEW YORK - When New York City Police officers saw a woman accused of shoplifting at a Manhattan Whole Foods store on Thursday, they didn't arrest her; instead, they paid for her meal. A store security guard asked three officers on a break from patrol Thursday to confront a woman who was suspected of shoplifting. "We'll pay for her food," Sojo said, to the surprise of the security guard and passersby. "I can imagine if I were standing there with a security guard, I'd assume the worst," said local documentary filmmaker Paul Bozymowski, who shared the photo on Twitter. Neither the Whole Foods store nor its corporate office responded to a request for comment.
